Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR)

For this post I want to explain about nuclear reactor. I take on example of nuclear reactor which is Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR).

Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR)
The main objectives of the ABWR program are design simplification; improved safety and reliability ; reduced construction, fuel and operating costs ; improved maneuverability ; and reduced radiation exposure and radioactive waste. The ABWR is the continuous result from BWR. The ABWR incorporates the best proven features from BWR designs in Japan, the United States and Europe. ABWR are available from two competing vendors (GE-Hitachi and Toshiba)

The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR)  has been developed by an international team of BWR manufacturers to respond to worldwide utility needs in the 1990's. The Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) is a Generation III Boiling Water Reactor. The ABWR generates electrical power by using steam to power a turbine connected to a generator, the steam is boiled from water using heat generated by fission reactions within nuclear fuel.
ABWR Power Plant Structure

ABWR Development
ABWRs are Generation III reactors based on the boiling water reactor. The ABWR was designed by General Electric and Japanese BWR suppliers. The standard ABWR plant design has a net output of about 1350 megawatts electrical.

There are many differences between the BWR and ABWR designs. The reactor coolant pump is changed from the combination of recirculation pumps and jet pumps to internal pumps (in-reactor-vessel type pump), the control rod drive system is changed to a combination of a motor-driven drive and a hydraulic pressure drive from the hydraulic pressure drive, and the containment is a reinforced-concrete type containment vessel.

Major Specifications for BWR and ABWR

ABWR Technologies
ABWRs adopt the following superior technologies.
            Reactor pressure vessel and internals
            External recirculation system eliminated
            Internal pump
            Control rod and drive mechanism
Safety - Simplified active safety systems
            Digital control and instrumentation systems
            Control room design
            Plant construction '

Hello,
Interesting article, but a bit difficult to understand. However , I would like to know, what other types of reactors for nuclear power generation exist? And where does ABWR compare to these other alternatives? Thank you

to jason,

tq for the comment..i quite agree with your opinion that this article is too hard to understand but very nice for our knowledge..

about your question, other reactor is PWR...let me compare this two...below are their advantages and disadvantages:

PWR:
1)two loops(higher capital cost)
2)Higher pressure increases capital cost
3)High power density
4)Higher temperatures
5)Good control over coolant purity

BWR:
1)Single loop (lower capital cost)
2)Lower pressure decreases capital cost
3)Low power density due to boiling moderator
4)Better power distribution
5)Lower temperatures
6)Little control over coolant purity

tq...i hope that you get some knowledge...

I have read about many other reactors used in powerplant reactors such as magnox reactor which is gas cooled and graphite moderated, advance gas cooled reactor which is also uses gas cooled and graphite moderated, the common one pressurized water reactor, boiling water reactor, canadian deuterium uranium and the final type RBMK.

My question is why is pressurized water reactor and boiling water reactor is the one commonly used? As far as i know Boiling water reactor is the proposed power plant reactor in Malaysia.I know that RBMK is the reactor which actually caused the freak accident in Chernobyl. Why is the other type of reactor is not used? What are their disadvantages in our country?

The RBMK is a unique reactor type: its moderator is graphite (in this respect it resembles the AGRs), the coolant is boiling light water (as in the case of BWRs), moreover it has pressure tubes (like the CANDUs). The world's first nuclear power plant reactor was an RBMK (Soviet Union Obninsk, 1954). To this type belongs the Chernobyl reactor unit that suffered an accident on 26 April 1986.

Disadvantage of RBMK:
1. The core is very large and therefore control is very difficult. In Chernobyl, for example, there were 200 control rods (as a comparison, in Paks there are only 37).

2. Void reactivity coefficient can be positive in certain cases, which means that under extreme circumstances coolant boiling away may result in a rise in reactivity.
